Scratch Building With HobbyKing Parts

This is just a quick video about making a Scratch Built plane using parts from Hobby King. The plane we decide to build is the rcFoamFighters FF-117, a plane loosely designed after the Lockheed F-117A Stealth Fighter List of Hobby King parts: Battery, Turnigy 3S 2200maH 35-70C Nanotech (.97) www.hobbyking.com Turnigy DLUX 55A Brushless ESC (.18) www.hobbyking.com Turnigy 3010B-1300 Brushless Motor (.47) www.hobbyking.com HobbyKing HK-939MG Servos (.37) www.hobbyking.com Note you will also need to Provide at least a 4 Channel Transmitter and Receiver cabable of Delta Mixing. Link to rcFoamFighters “Planes” page where you can find the FREE plans to the FF-117: rcfoamfighters.com

I am searching for full size plan to print as one big plan, is there one?

@bicyclemonkey Yep pretty much.Everything except the wooden Motor which i used 5-min epoxy for that. Hot glue is a little heavier, but so quick and easy to through the model together with.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Did you glue the whole thing together with hot glue?

@rcFoamFighters Thanks very much Paul, keep up the good work!

@rgthd007 If you download the plans or look on the rcFoamFighters website page for the model you will see some different motor options that I used when I originally designed the plane. Those motors and setups were quicker than this one. I believe I radar clocked it at over 70mph. Also please see the rcFoamFighters YouTube channel for more videos about the FF-117 model and many more. Thanks again,
    Paul

@catamaranman333 Yeah i did the same to my old parkzone spitfire about a year ago and i uploaded a video on here showing how i went about it and it came out really well,i did the same to all the rcfoamfighter scratch builds to and i’ve got to try and find the time to do a few more of my PZ warbirds this winter ;-)

Great job Paul and i still have my F-117 that i got from your website ;-) yours fly well inverted so i might have to give that a go next time i take mine out = thumbs up.

Paul and Frank coached me through my 1st modified scratch built foam board plane several yeas ago. It’s the most rewarding thing I have ever done in RC and I recommend that everyone try it out at least 1 time

Really nice build bet it costs next to nothing if you already have the electronics and the flying experience

Il just say this is the best audio iv heard on a youtube video!!!!!

@Tsavah I got some ultra-light cloth from “fiberglasssite” that you can read a newspaper through! I have been building solid foam wings or foam skinned wings and then adding 2 layers of this glass and sanding smooth. It’s about the same mess as using that lightweight spackling but makes carbon spars unnecessary and allows for a much better, sandable finish. Figure you already know this but thought the noobs could use the info. I sure had alot of help from the YouTube set as I was learning!

@trevorsrockin Just got a T9X from Hobbyking and I love it! You just can’t beat a 9-channel radio for $50 shipped! Don’t listen to the reviews of the buggy V1 firmware. The new firmware seems great. There are even some custom, open-source firmwares popping up that let you do things like servo slowing for scale looking flaps or gear. I have even heard of firmware that allow telemetry to be viewed on the LCD a la Spektrum DX8!

@wingspan100 there are sources for colored tape on the internet. You can also use stuff like HK’s version of monokote. If you follow the link to the plans page for this model I have a link to a place to get tape. Also search for Colored packing tape or Sealing tape on the internet. Tape Bros is a good source.

@HobbykingLive Thank you. If you decide to upgrade for more speed, can you let us know what you used for a motor? Thank you.

  20. HobbykingLive says:

@trevorsrockin depends on what you want. HobbyKing has low priced controllers for around $39 and they go up from there. Depends on what you are looking for and what else you may want to use the radio for in the future. If you want to make this model make sure you get a radio that supports Delta mixing.

  21. HobbykingLive says:

@rgthd007 I may try a 7×6 prop on 4S lipo and see if that gives any more speed. Other than that you can chnge out the motor to a higher kv motor.

  22. rgthd007 says:

Nice. The plane looks great and seems to fly well. What would you do to get a little more speed out of it?

  23. Tsavah says:

I normally remove the paper skins from RB to save a significant amount of weight. The packing tape skin is the better way to go and tends to do the job well, but there are other options to strengthen the foam board without gaining much weight. It is also possible to use very thin/lite fiber glass cloth and a lightweight epoxy or varnish with pigment mixed in. I don’t mind if I can still see a bit of cloth weave.

  24. wingspan100 says:

Is there a source for the colored packing tape?

  25. JollySwagman2006 says:

Nice Scratch build of the FF117 and flying great too, great use of the HobbyKing parts too,
Maybe also if a different 55A ESC was used would also have reduced the weight factor slightly too,
this setup would be sweet, 2500kv turnegy 450 H motor, 6 X 5.5 prop, 50amp hobby king speed control
